Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Effective and Reflective Practices - Softcover

9780130190734: Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Effective and Reflective Practices

Synopsis

This book is best suited for a course on inclusion or mainstreaming. It also may be appropriate for introductory courses in special education, methods courses in special education, and courses on collaboration.

Thoroughly revised, Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Effective and Reflective Practices, fourth edition, provides a practical and research-based, non-categorical approach to creating inclusive classrooms for ALL students, regardless of learning ability, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, linguistic background, or family structure. Unlike many texts, which focus mainly on including students with physical or mental disabilities, this text focuses on practical strategies for helping teachers create environments where instruction is truly individualized to meet the needs of ALL students who face challenges that might affect their learning. By incorporating the themes of diversity, reflective practice, collaboration and technology, the book is consistent with NCATE and other professional standards for preparing teachers to work in today's diverse classrooms.

Review

The overall strengths of the chapters are that they cover the topics very thoroughly. It is one of the most comprehensive texts I have seen. All chapters seem current and accurate. The readability level is great. My students really like this text.

Georgine G. Steinmiller, Henderson State University

The quality of application is fantastic. These strategies are current, accurate, and research based.

Frank Lilly, Sacramento State

I love it!! Quality of application is very good. Nice case studies at the beginning of chapters that enable candidates to begin thinking and making connections to the classroom.

Linda Johnston, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

This is the most comprehensive introduction text I have ever reviewed! Praxis and CEC Standard alignment throughout the text are excellent.

Sarah Summy, Western Michigan

From the Back Cover

More reflective, more practical...This inclusion text goes beyond discussing how to teach students with varying learning abilities to address issues of gender, race, ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, and family structures.

Features of the fourth edition include:

  • Emphasizes reflective practice through two new features: Reflective on Professional Practices and Reflecting on Your Practices.
  • Unique concluding chapter discusses and demonstrates how to assess the success of your inclusion program.
  • Each chapter includes textual content related to multiculturalism, and ends with What Would You Do in Today's Diverse Classroom? reflective exercises.
  • Includes a CD-ROM, "Developing Quality IEPs: A Case-Based Tutorial", which guides students through the development of IEPs and the criteria necessary to assess their quality.
  • a text-specific Companion Website and video package have been integrated into the book.
