For one-semester, senior/graduate-level courses in Prestressed Concrete in the department of Civil Engineering.

Completely revised to reflect the new ACI 318-02 Building Code and International Building Code 2000 and its 2002 modifications, this popular text offers a unique approach to examining the design of prestressed concrete members in a logical, step-by-step trial and adjustment procedure. Encouraging clear, systematic thinking, it integrates handy flow charts to help students better understand the steps needed for design and analysis. Extensive discussions on material properties and concrete performance are provided, as well as an in-depth analysis of prestressing of circular tanks for liquid and gas containment and their prestressed shell roofs.

From the Back Cover:

A state-of-the-art book written by a national and international expert on concrete structures and materials, this fourth edition of Prestressed Concrete-A Fundamental Approach reflects the very latest ACI 318-02 Code and International Building Code IBC 2000-2003. It puts at the disposal of the user the author's many years of professional and academic know-how in design, construction, and forensic engineering.

This book is different from most because its major topics of material behavior, prestress losses, flexure, shear, torsion, and deflection-camber are sequentially self-contained and can be covered in one semester at the senior and the graduate levels. It uniquely follows procedures given in over 20 flowcharts and 400 illustrations that simplify the understanding and application of the subject in design, using both the customary US and the SI units in the examples.

Additionally, you will find:

  • All examples are revised in this edition to conform to the new ACI 318-02 Strain Limits Method in the flexural design of prestressed concrete members.
  • A detailed chapter on the design of statically indeterminate prestressed beams and portal frames.
  • A revised chapter containing the latest ACI and AASHTO Provisions on the design of post-tensioned beam anchorage end blocks using the strut-and-tie approach. A revised chapter on slender columns including a simplified load-contour biaxial bending method.
  • A chapter with comprehensive design examples on LRFD and standard design of bridge deck members for flexure, shear and torsion, conforming to the latest AASHTO specifications.
  • A chapter on seismic design of ductile prestressed concrete frames and shear walls in high seismicity zones conforming to the latest IBC 2000-2003 and ACI 318-02 Codes.
  • A comprehensive chapter on the design of prestressed concrete tanks and shell roofs.

About the Author

Edward G. Nawy is a distinguished professor with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
