Theauthors have not only collected the data and put it in a searchable format--they have also classified all the reactions according to the mechanism, i.e. the catalytic cycle. This database is easily accessible and of enormous value because it can be searched from the point of view of the reagents, the reaction products, or the underlying mechanism. For each type of mechanism, the search can be done by author name, periodic structure, substructure, solvent, or catalyst ligand.
The database will be more than a collection of data. With approximately 500–700 reactions added each year, the CD-ROM will be a source of inspiration to synthetic chemists, helping them choose the best mechanism for the reaction they want to achieve.

About the Author:

Jean-Luc Malleron received his graduate degree from the school of chemistry at Montpellier and then went on to obtain his Ph.D. at the Université Paris Sud. Malleron has been Senior Research Fellow in medicinal chemistry at Rhône-Poulec Rorer Company since 1981.

Alain Juin is a research scientist at Rhône-Poulec Rorer Company.

The search times are less than 15 seconds even on a slower 486 computer...Overall the program provides a useful tool for both academic and industrial chemists who wish to search for palladium-catalyzed reactions. This database will be a useful addition to any library's collection, particularly if the publishers fulfill their stated intention to publish periodic updates. The ease with which searchable databases can be updated to include current literature enhances their value.
