The most complete guide of its kind, this is still the favored handbook for chemical and process engineers who need a reliable and authoritative solution to their practical on the job problems. Includes all new material on new processing sectors, include biopharmaceuticals. The text is comprehensively revised and updated with new data and formulas. Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers solves process design problems quickly, accurately and safely, with hundreds of common sense techniques, shortcuts and calculations.

Key features:

  • Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers brings together solutions, information and work-arounds that engineers in the process industry need to get their job done
  • New material in the Fifth Edition includes physical properties for proprietary materials, six new chapters, including pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical sector heuristics, process design with simulation software, and guidelines for hazardous materials and processes
  • Now includes SI units throughout alongside imperial (i.e., U.S. Customary)
New to this edition:
  • New chapter on biopharmaceutical systems
  • New chapter on closed-loop heat transfer systems
  • Extensively rewritten chapters on fluid flow, fractionation, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, safety, and controls
  • Latest information on packed columns and structured packings
  • Excel workbooks, with Visual Basic for Applications function subroutines, that solve many of the problems in the book
  • Fully updated references

    From the Author:

While preparing this all new edition of Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers, I kept the practicing engineer firmly in mind. Each chapter tells a story to give you the information you need to understand and complete various aspects of a project. The look and feel are familiar to readers of previous editions, but the information is tied together in new ways to give meaning and context to the equations, tables, and charts. I also created spreadsheet templates that provide worked examples for many of the procedures that are explained in the book. The templates are completely "live," so you can use them for your own problems or adapt them to create new spreadsheets of your own design.

A great example is the chapter on heat exchangers. The text starts with a general introduction and gives four factors that impact the performance, longevity, and maintenance requirements for heat transfer equipment. TEMA terminology is explained, along with the use of TEMA data sheets for specifying heat exchangers. The section called "Selection Guides" then discusses shell-and-tube, plate-and-frame, and spiral heat exchangers, describing their uses and comparing their attributes. The "Design Recommendations" section poses questions that should be addressed as the heat exchanger is specified and designed; a data sheet could be prepared at this point and sent to vendors for pricing. But the chapter goes on to present a step-by-step iterative procedure for calculating the inside and outside heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. All of the equations are presented in the text, but the spreadsheet template puts them to work to not only solve a liquid-liquid probem with your specific data, but also prepare a TEMA style data sheet. There are also sections giving typical heat transfer coefficients and fouling factors, thermal conductivity of metals, and a bulleted list of installation recommendations. From the information and advise in this chapter you can specify the correct type of heat exchanger for your project, do your own calculations to give you insight into how the exchanger will work (and allow you to intelligently review the heat exchanger design proposed by your vendor), and ensure that the exchanger is appropriately installed in your plant.

The 5th edition of Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers is completely rewritten. I started with the 4th edition and retained much of its chapter structure and writing style. But I used my own industry knowledge plus extensive literature reviews to ensure that the information presented in the 5th edition is as current and practical as possible. I reviewed some sections with the professors who published new correlations (2-phase flow, for example), and had most chapters peer reviewed by my colleagues in industry. I replaced or supplemented most of the nomographs from previous editions with equations and algorithms to implement on a computer. And I added the use of SI units throughout the book.

There is original material in the book as well. I invented a new chart to compare the applicable range of heat transfer fluids (e.g., Dowtherm, Syltherm, Therminol), and I refined the use of block flow diagrams to create a new presentation that I call "block-sequential diagrams."

I hope you find this to be an approachable and thoroughly practical reference for all aspects of plant design work, seen through the eyes of a chemical engineer.

    From the Back Cover:

This new edition of the most complete handbook for chemical and process engineers incorporates the latest information for engineers and practitioners who depend on it as a working tool. New material explores the recent trends and updates of gas treating and fractionator computer solutions analysis.

This convenient volume provides engineers with hundreds of common sense techniques, shortcuts, and calculations to quickly and accurately solve day-to-day design, operations, and equipment problems. Here, in a compact, easy-to-use format, are practical tips, handy formulas, correlations, curves, charts, tables, and shortcut methods that will save engineers valuable time and effort.
