The unique insecticidal and repellant properties of the six esters occurring in the pyrethrum daisy have been utilised commercially for over 160 years. However, as supply of pyrethrum extract is limited and costly, scientists have searched since 1937 for chemical additives to increase its effectiveness, known as synergists. Piperonyl butoxide is the most successful insecticide synergist and is added to numerous pesticide formulations, increasing the efficacy of many other insecticides as well as pyrethrum.
