**Differences from the first edition**

The second edition includes the essential content of the first and maintains its elementary character. Many minor cuts and revisions have simplified and somewhat shortened Chs.1-6. Old Ch.7 was divided in two to accommodate three new topics: Singularities of vector fields and the Poincare-Hopf theorem (5 pages), Covering surfaces (9 pages), Theorems of Bonnet and Hadamard (7 pages). An Appendix on Computers is supplied for users of Mathematica or Maple (14 pages). There are very many new or revised exercises and more than a dozen new figures.

Barrett O'Neill is currently a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has written two other books in advanced mathematics.
