The 1985 Housing Act allows 16 possible grounds for local authorities to re-possess council houses. This study, carried out for the Department of the Environment by the School for Advanced Urban Studies, Bristol, looks at how a number of local authorities have used these grounds, how they followed the case through to eviction, and suggests ways to establish a code of good practice. The study is a result of questionnaires sent out to all local authorities. A selected number were examined in greater detail, as well as the county courts and the council house tenants involved with each case.
