In the years following the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, there were several consular missions to remote parts of China. Here there were large tracts of land, still largely unexplored by Western travellers. The purpose of Mr Campbell's journey through Mongolia isn't immediately obvious, but the description he imparts is still as fresh and vivid today as when he first wrote it. On this particular journey, Consul Campbell travels north from Peking around the fringe of the Gobi Desert and into Mongolia. En route he records the history, landscape, and way of life of those he meets.
