Book Description London 1973, HMSO, UK First edition in dust jacket and protective box, Fine / Fine condition, 7 x 10, xix, 921 pages, maps, illus, notes, appendices, index. -------------------------------------Volume V is the fifth of six volumes which cover the campaigns on land, at sea, and in the air in that theatre of World War II between I939 and 1945. Like its predecessors it tries to present war in three elements as a unity. The fourth volume told how the forces of the Axis in Africa were at last destroyed in May 1943. This fifth volume describes the first return to the continent of Europe by large forces of the Allies. This invasion struck Italy out of the war, breaking the Rome-Berlin Axis, and presaging the doom of Hitler's Germany.-----------------------------------------The story begins with the conquest of Sicily in thirty-eight days and then describes the first seven months of the campaign against the German forces in Italy, from the Allied landings in September 1943 until the end of the three grim battles of Cassino in March 1944. The sixth volume will begin with Alexander's great offensive in May 1944, resulting in the capture of Rome, and will end with the surrender of the German armed forces in Italy on end May 1945.The present volume tells mainly of operations in the field: how the Allied armies and naval and air forces concerted war and waged it in their separate elements, land, sea, and air. The operations were very varied in type. Four times the land, sea, and air forces combined in landing on hostile shores: in Sicily; at Salerno and in the Toe of Italy; and at Anzio. The Volturno, Sangro, and Garigliano rivers were crossed against opposition, as were lesser streams. The dominant type of operation, however, was mountain warfare, accompanied by every rigour that harsh terrain and winter weather could impose, against German enemies who were brave, highly skilled in arms, stubborn, and enduring. Although in this type of warfare battles might be planned in terms of armies, corps, and divisions, yet success often depended upon the prowess of small units and even of individuals.-----------------------------------------------------While the armies grappled, the Allied air forces maintained their supremacy in the air, crippled the German Air Force in the theatre, brought their destructive might to bear upon the battlefields, disrupted the enemy's Line of Communication, and played a part in the Combined Bomber Offensive against Germany. The Allied naval forces, with the maritime air forces, ensured the free and safe passage of Allied shipping, hunted the enemy's submarines, and harassed and sank his ships wherever they were to be found. It is a commonplace that armed forces cannot exist, let alone fight, without a continuous supply of almost every article and commodity known to man. This volume tries to tell at least something of the great logistic achievement which maintained the forces in the field. While the volume deals mainly with operations in the field, it also describes in outline the general strategy of the Allies in the Mediterranean theatre, a subject which is fully treated in the Grand Strategy series of the official histories. This volume contains forty-six photographs chosen mainly to illustrate topography, and thirty-nine maps and diagrams in colour, and four in line block.
