The Commission's report examines competition concerns in the UK home shopping and home delivery sectors arising from the proposed acquisition of GUS (Great Universal Stores) plc by March UK Ltd, the largest home shopping business in the UK. The home shopping market includes agency and direct mail order, electronic shopping and catalogue retailing. March UK Ltd is controlled by the Barclay brothers who also own the Littlewoods company. With regards to the home shopping sector, the Commission unanimously found that the merger was likely to benefit customers and was not expected to reduce competition, when compared with the expected alternative result of the GUS businesses being wound down or otherwise ceasing to be an effective market competitor. The Commission's report concludes that the merger as a whole is not expected to operate against the public interest.
