Review:

"Narrated with the verve and pace of a picaresque novel, ["John Diamond"] combines a cast of remarkable eccentrics with superb sensory descriptions . . . Richly imagined and audacious in its balance of humor and suspense, the book is as absorbing as it is compelling." -"The Horn Book"

Book Description Vintage. 1 Paperback(s), 2014. soft. Book Condition: New. (Winner of the 1980 Whitbread Award for Children's Books) In this atmospheric historical suspense novel—purportedly for readers 10 to 14, though it turns out to appeal to everyone—young William Jones is on a desperate search through darkest London for John Diamond, the son of a man his father apparently once swindled. But the big city, with its sinister characters and murky back streets, is no place for a boy of 12. And John Diamond is not the sort of person to forgive and forget. "Leon Garfield's stories are a rich and highly flavored stir-fry of 18th-century adventure. Under their wild story lines the books reveal an impressive knowledge of Victorian and Regency lowlife. Young readers are drawn in by the involved, mysterious plots, adults appreciate the black, sometimes outrageous humor. These are books for communal family reading, in the way that Dickens and Fielding were enjoyed by parents and children together in the 19th century. It is a fine thing that Leon Garfield's rip-roaring and funny tales should be brought back into circulation for a new generation of readers."—Joan Aiken 250. Bookseller Inventory # 70862
