9780099568599: Good Bait

The compelling new paperback from the Cartier Diamond Dagger winner and Sunday Times bestselling author.
When a seventeen-year-old Moldovan boy is found dead on Hampstead Heath, the case falls to DCI Karen Shields and her overstretched Homicide & Serious Crime team. Karen knows she needs a result. What she doesn't know is that her new case is tied to a much larger web of gang warfare and organised crime which infiltrates almost every aspect of London society.

Several hundred miles away in Cornwall, DI Trevor Cordon is stirred from his day-to-day duties by another tragic London fatality. Travelling to the capital, Cordon becomes entangled in a lethally complex situation of his own. A situation much closer to Karen's case than either of them can imagine.

About the Author:

JOHN HARVEY is the author of the richly praised Charlie Resnick novels, the first of which, Lonely Hearts, was named by The Times as one of the '100 Best Crime Novels of the Century'. His first novel featuring Frank Elder, Flesh and Blood, won the CWA Silver Dagger in 2004, and a Barry Award for the Best British Crime Novel published in the US in 2004. In 2007 John Harvey was awarded the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger and in 2009 he was awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Letters, by the University of Nottingham.

From Booklist:

Since wrapping up his acclaimed Charlie Resnick series, Harvey has introduced several new coppers—some patrolling Resnick’s Nottingham turf; others in London and Cornwall—and the newbies have all displayed the complexity, vulnerability, and multifaceted appeal that fans have come to expect from a Harvey creation. That is especially true here, in a two-pronged crime tale featuring DCI Karen Shields (a bit player in earlier Harvey novels), of the London Homicide & Serious Crimes Unit, and soon-to-retire DI Trevor Cordon, from Cornwall. Shields is investigating the apparently drug-connected murder of a Moldovan teen, while Cordon is tracking a disappeared young woman with whom he has a past. Naturally, the two cases are related, and while Harvey expertly constructs the connective tissue, we find ourselves much more involved in Shields’ story; both plots are fully fleshed and engaging, but Shields steals the show, emerging as a starworthy creation. Harvey has always done very well with supporting female characters (Lynn Kellogg in the Resnick novels), but now he has a series lead on his hands crying out for more screen time. --Bill Ott
