Butch Cassidy and Sundance make way, here come Buck Miller and Billy Joe Speed, the fastest men in the West - but not with their guns. With their coach and mentor, the Honorable Professor Moriarty, they con their way from Kansas City to Mexico in 1870s America. They don't play by the rules and sometimes only their vaunted speed gets them out of town ahead of the lynch mob. Packed with characters and incident, and no small amount of historical detail The Fast Men is Tom McNab's follow up novel to the brilliant Flanagan's Run, published by Sandstone Press in 2014.

Tom McNab has experienced success as Olympic coach, prize winning novelist and Technical Director of the Oscar-winning film "Chariots of Fire". One of the world's leaders in sport, he has coached international athletes, the British Olympic Bobsleigh team and England's silver medal-winning squad in Rugby's 1992 World Cup. In the same year, he was awarded the British Coach of the Year. Tom has written several best-selling novels, including Flanagan's Run which reached number 1 on the world's best seller lists, with film rights taken by Disney. In 1982 he won the Scottish Novelist of the Year award and his repertoire of sporting films includes his work as script consultant and technical advisor for Chariots of Fire. He has been a commentator for ITV and Channel 4, a freelance journalist for the Observer, Sunday Telegraph, Times and Independent. From Publishers Weekly:
Despite the superficial character portrayal, this is an engrossing look at theatrical life and the foot-racing phenomenon ("pedestrianism") in the American West during the 1870s. The main playersand racersare Professor Moriarty, Buck Miller and Billy Joe Speed (all aliases) and their ladies. As Moriarty's "Theatre of the West" plies various Western towns, with occasional trips "back East," he and his younger cohorts work different foot-racing scams on the locals. They never cheat at racing but aren't above confusing opposing bettors and runners ("fast men") as to their true identities. Almost all the action revolves around the psychological warfare, physical training and actual racing contests. The major high points are a world-record sprint in England and a climactic men-and-horses competition in 1878 Arizona. We also get interesting glimpses of life upon the stage and of such real-life people as P. T. Barnum, Leland Stanford and Edwin Booth. Even readers not much interested in stage lore or pedestrianism will find it hard to put this book down: the pace never flags. McNab also wrote Flanagan's Run.
