9780099514565: Sail

As Peter Carlyle, a smooth-talking, super-successful lawyer, waved his family off on a sailing holiday, all they had in mind was lying back and relaxing. But as a violent storm broke out, an explosion caused the boat to vanish without a trace and the family were lost, presumed dead. Until now. When a message in a bottle is washed up on a shore, it becomes apparent that there must have been at least one survivor. But all is not as it seems. The race is on to rescue the Carlyles, but does everyone looking for the family really want to find them alive? Survival may be the least of their concerns. In fact, being found may be the last thing they should be hoping for.

About the Author:

JAMES PATTERSON is one of the best-known and biggest-selling writers of all time. He is the author of some of the most popular series of the past decade - the Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and Detective Michael Bennett novels - and he has written many other number one bestsellers including romance novels and stand-alone thrillers. He lives in Florida with his wife and son. James is passionate about encouraging children to read. Inspired by his own son who was a reluctant reader, he also writes a range of books specifically for young readers. James is very supportive of the National Literacy Trust, an independent, UK-based charity that changes lives through literacy. In 2010, he was voted Author of the Year at the Children's Choice Book Awards in New York.

From AudioFile:

Katherine Dunne plans a sailing trip with her three kids as a way to bring them closer. But from the beginning, the trip is fraught with danger in the form of mechanical malfunctions, storms, and other seemingly random problems. Katherine and the children work together to overcome adversity on the seas. The suspenseful tone is captured well by the production's pair of narrators. Dylan Baker excels, in particular, with a snarky, whiny tone and a deeper, slightly raspy voice for the two evil plotters. Jennifer Van Dyck varies the pitches for Katherine's children. While the narrators do a fine job overall, the book's sole problem is an organizational one. Several characters are voiced at different times by each narrator. For consistency's sake, that could have been avoided. But it doesn't mar the listener's enjoyment. M.B. AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
