Gr. 5-8. This great little book is sure to grab the interest of almost any young history buff or spy enthusiast. With droll delivery, occasional slapstick cartoons, and plenty of hilarious asides, Farman knows just how to reach kids and share the intrigue, danger, and often absurdity associated with the activities and eventual fates of spies. The first chapter offers a cursory introduction to spying, with the bulk of the text accounts of spies throughout history. In one chapter, Farman covers the very early spies (dating back to China, 510 B.C.E.); then he describes "unlikely" spies, women spies, and "deadly" spies. Farman's lighthearted approach makes page-turning fun with tidbits about double-crosses, bizarre assassinations, and devious trickery. Science fans will especially appreciate explanations of wild gadgets and simple spying techniques (such as how to make disappearing ink) that they might try at home or in class. For the information or just for the fun, kids will enjoy this book. Roger Leslie

The Short and Bloody History of... series by John Farman kicks off with five titles that present digestible chunks of information alongside comic illustrations. The Short and Bloody History of Ghosts begins by asking "What are ghosts?" before exploring such subjects as "Ghosts Around the World" and Animal Ghosts ("The most common four-legged phantoms are usually known as hellhounds and take the form of huge black dogs"). A glossary of ghostly lingo, suggestions for further reading and recommended Web sites round out the offering. Highwaymen; Knights; Pirates; and Spies follow the same format, with short bios of some infamous examples.
