9780099282587: Travels With My Aunt (Vintage Classics)

Henry Pulling, a retired bank manager, meets his septuagenarian Aunt Augusta for the first time in over fifty years at what he supposes to be his mother's funeral. Soon after, she persuades Henry to abandon Southwood, his dahlias and the Major next door to travel her way, Brighton, Paris, Istanbul, Paraguay. Through Aunt Augusta, a veteran of Europe's hotel bedrooms, Henry joins a shiftless, twilight society: mixing with hippies, war criminals, CIA men; smoking pot, breaking all the currency regulations and eventually coming alive after a dull suburban life.

In Travels with my Aunt Graham Greene not only gives us intoxicating entertainment but also confronts us with some of the most perplexing of human dilemmas.

Book Description Vintage. 1 Paperback(s), 1999. soft. Book Condition: New. First appearing in 1969—and the inspiration for the George Cukor film of the same name starring Maggie Smith—this novel from the author and playwright who gave us The Third Man, The End of the Affair, and Our Man in Havana takes a comic tone as it uncovers the false assumptions lurking under an ordered life. Retired bank manager Henry Pulling re-meets his septuagenarian Aunt Augusta at his mother's funeral. Soon she persuades Henry to abandon his life and travel her way, to Brighton, Paris, Istanbul, and Paraguay, and he finds himself feeling more and more alive as he joins a shiftless, twilight society of hippies, war criminals, and CIA men, and takes to breaking all the currency regulations."Rich in exactly etched and moving portraits of real human beings . the tragic and comic ironies of love, loyalty and belief."—Times (London) 262.
