9780099088400: To Glory We Steer

Portsmouth, 1782. His Britannic Majesty's frigate, Phalarope, is ordered to assist the hard-pressed squadrons in the Caribbean. Aboard is her new commander—Richard Bolitho. To all appearances the Phalarope is everything a young captain could wish for, but beneath the surface she is a deeply unhappy ship—her wardroom torn by petty greed and ambition, her deckhands suspected of cowardice under fire and driven to near-mutiny by senseless ill-treatment.

About the Author:

Alexander Kent, pen name of Douglas Edward Reeman, joined the British Navy at 16, serving on destroyers and small craft during World War II, and eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant. He has taught navigation to yachtsmen and has served as a script adviser for television and films. His books have been translated into nearly two dozen languages.

From AudioFile:

[Editor's Note: The following is a combined reviwe with PASSAGE TO MUTINY.]--Kent, which was a nom de plume of the late Douglas Reeman, here has created the nautical world of Captain Richard Bolitho that is every bit as exciting as the ones created by Forster and the late O'Brian. In these two works, Bolitho goes from the West Indies to the South Pacific, taking on pirates, the elements, the French and the Rebels from America, and assorted others. There is plenty of action, and the works display the author's intimate knowledge of naval lore and life. Michael Jayston reads with seeming ease. His narrative is fine and by itself a joy to hear--clear, crisp, even-paced. His vocal characterizations in both recordings are also superb. To give such a wide range of characters consistent and believable accents is a feat for which Jayston is to be commended.
