In this, Knox's first introduction of the notorious Chief Inspector Thane and Inspector Moss who appear in many of Knox's subsequent novels, a crime reporter, a gun, a money-worshipping girlfriend and inside knowledge of a factory payroll car's movements are a recipe for disaster. Following careful planning the reporter brings off the hold-up and carries away a large amount of untraceable bank notes. In the panic of the raid however, he shoots a young policeman dead and a full scale murder hunt ensues. Knox takes his readers stage by stage through ingenious planning of the crime and the dragnet of the investigation that follows, seeing them through the eyes of both the pursued and the pursuer.

Author Bill Knox first introduced Chief Inspector Thane and Inspector Moss in this novel. The death of a policeman and a reporter initiate a crime investigation. As narrator James Bryce methodically spins the details, we are privy to the cunning mind of a malicious journalist. His English accent befits the setting, and he provides an array of characters, including the suspect, detectives, parents, a girlfriend, shop-owners, and unwilling accomplices with a bevy of voices.
