Muriel Spark conveys exceptional insight into the minds of her women characters, but not as exemplary figures, for some are clearly flawed and wilfully contrive their own malevolent relationships. The women Judy Sproxton discusses are perhaps partly identifiable with Muriel Spark herself, and this is the most revealing aspect of this critical study.
