On 6 January this year Ian Charleson died of AIDS. He will be best remembered for his performance as Eric Liddell in "Chariots of Fire". This is a collection of profiles, anecdotes and memories of Charleson written by those who knew or worked with him. The tributes, some witty, some sad, all heartfelt, are tinged with Charleson's irresistable charm. Charleson was born in 1949 in Edinburgh, son of a printer. He grew up in a working-class area of the city and won a scholarship to Edinburgh University to study architecture. Soon realizing that his future lay in the theatre, he went on to gain a place at LAMDA and, from there, was quickly snapped up by the Young Vic Company.
