Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. London. Book Club Associates. 1974. Published by arrangement with John Constable Limited. A handsome edition with colour frontispiece and many black and white plates throughout. Scarlet cloth boards with gilt titles to spine. Apart from a very neat former owner name dated 1975 to the flyleaf, the contents are fine. Pictorial dust wrapper is also fine. Robert Clive was the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency. He is credited along with Warren Hastings for laying the foundation of British rule in India. 'Clive's glittering campaigns, amongst which the siege of Arcot is justly regarded as being one of the most memorable in military history, are described with great vividness and the author illuminates for his readers the intricate and devious negotiations which played an equally important part in establishing the British as rulers of Bengal.' Loosely laid in to the rear is a set of three line drawn maps of India, Bengal and The Carnatic. It is not known whether these maps belong in the body of the book but they are relevant to the text.
