'He'll either win the Victoria Cross or go to prison.' So said Keith Allen's headmaster, back in 1966. A Navy baby, Allen was moved from place to place, always leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. He could have been a footballer if his criminal career hadn't got in the way. Keith's chequered past has seen him keep a pet lion, down a mug of his own urine on stage with his mother looking on proudly in the audience and write a number one pop record. He has been incarcerated for smashing up a night club and almost sued for claiming he slept with a Dame. Since then, he's become renowned for his extrovert and contentious behaviour, his radical opinions and his acting pedigree. But at 54 years old ...has he finally grown up? Revelatory and unapologetically honest, "Grow Up" takes you on a break-neck journey through the chaotic life of someone who's broken all of the rules.

Review:
"Hugely entertaining autobiography. . . He zips through his life
like a speeding bullet with an erection, having a huge laugh and trailing
chaos . . . The emotion is of the inchoate, macho kind (refreshingly, there
isn't an iota of therapy-speak in these pages) but it is heartfelt and
authentic as is Allen himself. You end up rather loving him".
-- India Knight in Sunday Times Culture

Allen's memoir has much of the same ingredients as James's (Alex)
- lots of sex, drugs and bad behaviour - but he is a more natural writer
and is a graduate of the school of hard knocks (borstal, prison, the Comedy
Store) rather than soft landings. Grow Up begins with a bang: the biggest
bang of all. His submariner father is witnessing the detonation of the
first H-bomb. Allen's troubled relationship with his father, when he wasn't
away at sea, is described with honesty and sensitivity, as are all his
interactions with his extended family . . . Allen's autobiography is full
of four-letter words including work, play and love and is often very funny. -- Sunday Telegraph, July 1, 2007

The legendary hellraiser and father of inexplicably attractive
daughter Lily jots down his awesome life story . . . very much present are
tales of owning a pet lion and drinking his own piss on stage. 4 stars out
of 5. -- Zoo
