Vitali's fearless journalism made him a national hero in the USSR, as well as a sitting target for the criminals he has helped to convict. In this book he investigates the continuing miscarriages of justice - punitive psychiatry, labour camps, rampant anti-semitism, lack of food, violence in the Baltic Republics - with the contention that it is still the same corrupt communist system, just under a new dictator, Gorbachev. Fearing for his life and after continuing attempts by the KGB to recruit him to spy for them, Vitali also records in full his desparate last few months which led to the heroic escape of himself, his wife and their 10-year-old son across the border into Poland in January 1990. The author has written many articles for "The Guardian", "The Independent" and "The Melbourne Age" and currently lives in Australia, where he gained poltical asylum in 1990. He is also the author of "Special Correspondent".

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photographic (illustrator). First Edition. 500 g; XIV, 210 pages, indexed, and with a central eight-page photographic section. The edges of the pages have browned, there is a small (very small moisture mark to the external edge of pages 208 -- 210). No other damage to describe. Described by the Sunday Telegraph as "a warrior of the pen", leading Soviet satirist and investigator journalist Vitali Vitaliev put his life at risk by exposing miscarriages of justice that no other reporter was brave enough touched. But by 1991 freedom of the press, one of the hallmarks of perestroika, no longer exists, the size of the KGB has grown ominously, new repressive laws to "protect the honour and dignity of the President" have been passed. -- Front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
