9780091741693: Wriggly Pig

Unable to sit still, Wriggly Pig squirms in the car during car trips, runs at the beach, fidgets at the movie theater, and makes a spectacle of himself at posh restaurants.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Wriggly, a pig of indeterminate age, has two seemingly perfect siblings; parents who allow him to behave like an obnoxious boor; and an annoying habit of acting inappropriately wherever he goes. Since he won't listen to anyone else, his mother and father decide a doctor may be able to help him . The overactive piglet squirms off the table, out the door, and knocks himself unconscious as he runs into a mailbox. When he comes to, his family is filled with remorse and assure him that he should go right on being hyper. Amusing, squiggly pen-and-watercolor illustrations do little to alleviate the confusing, heavy-handed text. Is wriggling wrong or is correcting it wrong--or maybe neither? Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (HarperCollins, 1988) and many of Marjorie Sharmat's books have dealt with the subject of behavior with a lighter and more clever hand. A garbled message delivered by way of stilted text makes this a book to wriggle away from. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY

From Publishers Weekly:

Although the rest of his brood is quiet and well-mannered, Wriggly Pig can't sit still for a minute. After his hyperkinetic horseplay ruins a series of family outings, everyone despairs of what to do with him. Blake imbues his thin story with a gentle sweetness, but too much space is devoted to exposition--descriptions of the out-of-control piglet at the movies, at the beach, at a cafe--and not enough to the abrupt resolution. When Wriggly's high-speed activities lead to a collision with a mailbox that knocks him senseless, his family immediately realizes that they'd rather have a wriggling relative than none at all. Happy at last, the whole bunch wriggles their way home. Jenkin-Pearce's illustrations evoke a playful motion that helps sustain the book. Tremulous ink lines filled with bright-hued watercolors combine delicacy and animation in capturing Wriggly's nonstop gyrations. The presentation of this familiar theme, though buoyed by ebullient artwork, unfortunately lacks originality. Ages 3-up.
