Presents whimsical poems about various animals, some of which contain information.

Grade 2-4 Young children enjoy animals and trivia, but they won't appreciate these weakly crafted poems. The rhymes are forced; the rhythms are stilted; and the animal facts are often misleading, incorrect, or simply nonsensical. A poem about the ocelot calls it an animal ``you can't boss a lot'' and that ``It lives in Central/ And South America./ It's never called Eric/ Or Erica.'' It would be difficult to find an audience for this book. Many of the poems include difficult vocabulary, Briticisms, or allusions beyond the experience of the elementary school children who will be drawn to the black ink illustrations. A child's exposure to poetry should be a positive experiencethis one won't be. Cynthia Dobrez, Grand Haven Junior High Sch . , Mich.
