9780080445342: Advanced Machining Processes of Metallic Materials: Theory, Modelling and Applications

Advanced Machining Processes of Metallic Materials updates our knowledge on the metal cutting processes in relation to theory and industrial practice. In particular, many topics reflect recent developments, e.g. modern tool materials, computational machining, computer simulation of various process phenomena, chip control, monitoring of the cutting state, progressive and hybrid machining operations, and generation and modelling of surface integrity.

This book addresses the present state and future development of machining technologies. It provides a comprehensive description of metal cutting theory, experimental and modelling techniques along with basic machining processes and their effective use in a wide range of manufacturing applications. Topics covered include fundamental physical phenomena and methods for their evaluation, available technology of machining processes for specific classes of materials and surface integrity. The book also provides strategies for optimalization techniques and assessment of machinability. Moreover, it describes topics not currently covered in other sources, such as high performance and multitasking (complete) machining with a high potential for increasing productivity, and virtual and e-machining.

The research covered here has contributed to a more generalized vision of machining technology, including not only traditional manufacturing tasks but also new potential (emerging) applications such as micro- and nanotechnology.

  • Many practical examples of modern machining technology
  • Applicable for various technical, engineering and scientific levels
  • Collects together 20 years of research in the field and related technical information

From the Back Cover:

This book brings updated knowledge on the metal cutting processes in relation to theory and industrial practice. In particular, it collects and shares in one single volume the extensive knowledge on the state-of-the-art of machining theory, including numerical simulations, and practice based on high-level technology enterprises from Europe, USA and Japan. Many topics, which reflect recent developments in machining technology, cover such important problems as modern tool materials, computational machining, computer simulation of various process phenomena, chip control, monitoring of the cutting state, progressive and hybrid machining operations, and generation and modelling of surface integrity.

The content of the book was established based on over twenty years author’s tracking the most valuable technical information from technical universities and industrial research centres, and collecting hundreds published books and papers in this and other closely related fields of science. As a result, this compendium can advise how one can achieve satisfactory quality of the broad spectrum of the machine parts of sizes ranging from meters down to imicro/nanometers. As a complete reference it can be dedicated for upper-level undergraduate, graduate, PhD students and researchers in metal cutting area who are working in manufacturing, mechanical and industrial engineering sectors. It is can also be addressed to experienced engineers in these disciplines as a self-study guide.

About the Author:

Wit Grzesik, MSc, PhD, DSc
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, obtained an M.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland, in 1973, a Ph.D. in manufacturing engineering from this university in 1981, and a D.Sc. (habilitation) in mechanical engineering from Warsaw University of Technology in 1988. From 1973 to 1975 he worked in industry as a design engineer. In 1975 he joined the Technical University of Opole, Poland. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering as Assistant Professor from 1982 to 1988, Associate Professor from 1988 to 1991 and Professor to 1999. At present he is a Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Production Automation at the Technical University of Opole.

He has published more than 140 papers in journals and conference proceedings, two research monographs on metal cutting mechanics and machinability of austenitic stainless steels, and three books on machining of metallic materials, advanced coatings for engineering applications and programming of CNC machine tools. His research interests include the theory and modeling of metal removal processes, monitoring of manufacturing processes, surface integrity, quality engineering and CAD/CAM and modern manufacturing systems.

Currently, he is a Member of two Sections of the Polish Academy of Science, and a Member of ESAFORM and a Senior Member of the NAMRI/SME (U.S.)
