Synopsis:

The factors that govern the selection of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment technologies are experiencing major changes: society's higher expectations, expressed in stricter legislation and control, combined with developments in advanced treatment technologies are bringing these newer processes into focus. The two aspects of wastewater treatment perhaps of greatest interest at present are nutrient removal and applications of anaerobic techniques. These were the key themes which drew over 160 experts from around the world to Amsterdam. From the large number of oral and poster presentations, 27 papers have been selected for this issue. Three keynote papers highlight the state-of-the-art and trends in advanced wastewater treatment, anaerobic wastewater treatment and micropollutants in sustainable wastewater treatment. The other papers cover the following themes: integrated systems (combinations of aerobic, anaerobic and/or physical-chemical treatment); modelling of treatment systems; removal of nitrogen and phosphorus; micropollutants; anaerobic treatment processes; and sustainable treatment.
