In 1918 the pre-War scheme of settling men in Scotland on crofts and smallholdings acquired a new urgency and scope. The working out of this scheme, involving hundreds of farms throughout Scotland, was bedevilled with problems - clashes with landowners and government, also within government. Men in the Western Isles, enraged by government delays, took the law into their own hands, raided large estates and ploughed up the land as their own. Dr Leneman has looked at the source material as a social historian and has interviewed people whose memories of land settlement add an important dimension to the picture.
