Unlike some regions of Scotland and England, Aberdeenshire's involvement in Africa has been less in commerce than in education. In the eighteenth century numerous young men, soundly schooled in the Northeast, ventured into the world opened up by the Union with England and by the overseas expansion of the United Kingdom. Aberdeen's two universities became a main communicative channel from Aberdeenshire to Africa. During the nineteenth century Christian learning was allied to the skills of physicians, engineers and agriculturalists, and new careers in the government of the British Empire.
