Patterns for a Purpose, Fifth Edition, is a rhetorical reader that shows students how to use the rhetorical patterns—either alone or in combination—to achieve various writing purposes. It continues to emphasize critical reading and thinking, to offer detailed coverage of the writing process, to provide a rich variety of writing opportunities, to emphasize argumentation and persuasion, and to provide reading selections, both classic and contemporary, that function as models as well as springboards for discussion and writing.

From the Publisher:
Twenty-five Readings: These new selections have been included to offer a wider range of length and difficulty than in the First Edition. The new authors include Ralph Ellison, Garrison Keillor, Desmond Morris, Nat Hentoff, Elie Wiesel, and others.
Organized by Pattern: Each patterns of development - narration, description, definition, etc... - is treated in a separate chapter.
Purposes For The Pattern: Every Pattern is introduced by an analysis of the purpose the pattern can serve in student writing. In addition, at least two essays in each chapter demonstrate how the pattern can be combined with two or more other patterns.
Critical Thinking and Reading: Chapter 2 addresses these crucial skills and includes a section on avoiding errors in logic, a step-by-step guide to active reading, and a sample annotated essay.
Argumentation-Persuasion Is A Pattern and A Purpose: Argumentation-persuasion essays appear in every chapter. In addition, Chapter 11 provides strategies for writing essays using this pattern, along with a casebook of ten essays on controversial issues, including affirmative action, campus speech codes, and animal rights.
More Apparatus: Each selection is supported by expanded headnotes, by prompts for collaborative work, and by writing assignments for each reading.
Cross Curriculum Emphasis: Each chapter discusses how the pattern is used in writing for different college courses. These sections demonstrate for students that they will be able to apply each pattern they are learning throughout their college careers.
Practical Reference: The text includes an appendix on using sources, with strategies for paraphrasing, quoting, summarizing, and synthesizing material from other sources as well as guidelines for using MLA style to cite borrowed material.
About the Author:
