This textbook is designed for a diverse audience ranging from chemistry majors to students in any of the life sciences. The logical organization (discussion of molecular structure immediately followed by the role it plays in metabolism) leads students through the complex world of biochemistry, while an impressive art program helps to guide them through up-to-date concepts.

Biochemical Processes presented, wherever possible, in a cellular or organismal context. Examples include the urea cycle (Ch. 14), fatty acid metabolism (Ch.10), the glyoxylate cycle (Ch. 11), and gluconeogenesis and calcium metabolism (Ch. 8)
Plant Biochemistry reflects the latest DNA technology and provides more information on the unique adaptations of plants.
Biotransformation Chapter (Ch. 19) provides a concise and understandable discussion of how potentially toxic substances are disposed of in animals (and to a lesser extent in plants).
Unique Discussions of Oxidative Stress. McKee provides a concise explanation of the biochemical consequences of the interaction of oxygen radicals and biomolecules and the role antioxidant play in the prevention of further damage.
For each class of biomolecules, molecular structure and function is presented followed immediately by the role it plays in metabolism. For example, a chapter devoted to primarily to glucose and glycogen metabolism (Ch. 8) follows the chapter devoted to carbohydrate structure (Ch. 7).
First Four Chapters-An Introduction and Review.
Chapters 1-4 present a review of basic biology, organic chemistry, and general chemistry.
Trudy McKee is an Assistant Professor in the college of Allied Health Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania, where she regularly teaches biochemistry. She has her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Bryn Mawr College.
James McKee is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. He regularly teaches organic chemistry. He has a Ph.D in organic chemistry from University of Maryland.
