Review:

Search engines and subject trees are great if you want to find every last reference to some obscure topic, but they are not the best if you want a refined list of sites about gardening, fishing, Paul McCartney or some other popular topic. Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages allows you to look up a subject and see an annotated list of sites the author recommends. It's an old idea, but Hahn implements it well. It's a great way to locate Internet resources you otherwise wouldn't have found, and Hahn's light writing style is fun.

Some of Hahn's organisational choices seem strange. You can look up Canada directly and find lots of information, but you have to look for all other countries of the world under "Governments: International"--a strange structure. Cross-referencing is lacking, too: You have to look in the index to find out that the wine sites are listed under "food". You'll probably want to use the index if you're doing anything other than casual browsing. In fact, casual (you might say random) browsing is what this book is best for. The author has located some cool resources, and you'll enjoy his guided tour. Scan the print version, or use the index on the companion CD-ROM.

Parents, be aware that Hahn covers all aspects of the Web, and though there's a lot of kid- and general-interest stuff listed here, there's also a little bit about adult subjects (the Kama Sutra, for example, and the infamous Terrorist's Handbook). --David Wall, Amazon.com
