Fed Up! is an important new book aimed squarely at the masses (mostly women) who are making themselves miserable and unhealthy by dieting. In Fed Up, Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt - herself a survivor of bulimia as well as a medical doctor and psychiatrist specializing in mild to life-threatening eating disorders - provides ample evidence of the epidemic proportions of this problem and its devastating effects on people's physical and mental health (both short-term and long-term). She provides checklists to help readers recognize how "at risk" they may be, and offers a rare, personal, compassionate perspective as someone who has personally suffered from an eating disorder. (Now a happy, healthy, working mom, Dr. Oliver-Pyatt will be a great spokesperson for the book and an immediately appealing role model for her readers.) Dr. Oliver-Pyatt's view is that dieting is a self-destructive behavior that millions of people practice for most of their lives--with counterproductive, destructive, and completely exhausting results. Obviously, this makes no rational sense, and this book begins by taking a look at why so many otherwise smart people persist, redoubling their dieting and/or exercise efforts with each attempt to lose weight. The book then moves on to a comprehensive ten-step plan to help people understand their own attitudes and behaviors and create a health-promoting, sustainable lifestyle - without ever counting another calorie or a fat gram, stepping on a scale, fearing "fattening" foods, or feeling guilty for missing a workout. Although there are countless diets books on the market, this one has a lot to offer: It is medically sound (written by a respected MD specializing in overcoming eating disorders), its author will appeal to the target audience (she has overcome an eating disorder and is now a happy, healthy working mum), and it takes a holistic, intelligent approach to adopting a fit lifestyle. Another appealing aspect is that the book does not try to sell the reader anything - no meal plans, no supplements, no "ab rollers," etc. Finally, the book is clearly written with a tone that blends rigorous professionalism with a natural approachability.

From the Author:
Don't start another diet until you get Fed Up!
Why? Because Fed Up! tells you everything you need to know to achieve a healthy, attractive body and a lifetime of fitness, without ever going on a diet again.
In fact, Fed Up! explains why dieting causes you to gain, not lose weight,--something that won't surprise millions who spend 30 to 50 billion dollars a year on weight loss product, suffer, starve, and yet still keep putting on pounds. Did you know that diets work only 2-5% of the time to cause long-term weight loss? That's why many diet products and books say, "Results not typical" in fine print. To lose weight, you need to STOP dieting and start working with your body rather than against it. Fed Up! takes the problem of overeating seriously, and addresses the underlying issue of why you eat, rather than recommending--yet again--another food regimen.
As a psychiatrist who survived the torment of dieting, and eventually an eating disorder, I understand your struggle. Let's face it: If we could simply make the behavioral changes suggested by most diets products, such as eating different foods, cutting down on calories or carbs, or exercising more and harder, WE'D ALL BE THIN! But it's not that easy--and most of us know it.
In Fed Up! I explain the scientific reasons why diets add pounds rather than subtracting them. (For instance, medical research proves that dieting increases stress levels--and stress is now recognized as a factor causing weight gain, through its effects on the hormone cortisol.) As a medical doctor, I describe how dieting "decouples" your eating from your appetite, creating a vicious mental an biological cycle that leads, almost inevitably, to uncontrollable eating and weight gain--and to crushing guilt and low self-esteem that lead you right back to the refrigerator.
Today, I live in a house full of ice-cream, bread, leftover spaghetti, and other formerly "taboo" foods, and I never--ever--worry about my weight. Whether I'm eating in a restaurant, making holiday cookies with my children, or enjoying a take-out pizza, I enjoy a relaxed relationship with food. That's because I know I'm in control, and I will never need to fear food, or my own appetite again. And yes, this is possible for you too!
My Ten-Step Diet-Free Fitness Plan tells you how you can reclaim your body, and reach a healthy weight, by freeing yourself from the diet trap and re-learning the natural way to eat. In addition I'll tell you:
How you can fight the cultural myths that make you gain weight
How to replace grueling exercise regimens with "fun physicality" that's far more effective for long-term fitness (and why obesity experts now recognize that it's not what you do for exercise but whether you exercise that determines long term weight loss)
How to prevent eating disorders and obesity in children (and why many "expert" suggestions about controlling weight in your children do far more harm than good)
How to identify medical and mental health conditions that could sabotage your weight loss efforts
How to get out of the rut of a diet-focused life, once you free yourself from endlessly counting calories and carbs
When you stop dieting, and use my Ten-Step No-Diet Fitness Plan to re-learn how to identify and respect your body's cues, you an at last lose weight permanently. I know, because I haven't dieted in years--and I never will again. I've watched the steps that freed me from dieting work for many others as well. They worked for my patients. They work for my friends. And they can work for you. You CAN achieve long-term fitness, if you follow the clear, simple steps I outline in Fed Up.
It's time to get off the "weight cycling" merry-go-round, and try an approach that takes your body AND mind seriously. It's time to get Fed Up!, and learn how to take control of your eating and enjoy food and your body--forever.

Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, M.D.

From the Back Cover:

Consumers spend $30 billion a year on diet programs, pills, and special foods, yet none of these products seems to deliver lasting results. The truth is that between 95 and 98 percent of dieters fail to keep weight off permanently. Worse still, many actually gain weight because dieting distorts the natural human ability to sense internal cues of satiety and well-being. Dieting wreaks havoc on the mind, body, and soul.

The weight-loss industry preys on human insecurities. The media bombard us with advertisements for new diets, weight-loss creams, body wraps, and expensive exercise equipment. Frustrated and overwhelmed, many eventually give up on the idea of ever reaching a healthy or normal weight. The simple truth is that we haven't failed dieting. Dieting has failed us.

For years, Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, M.D., suffered through countless diets that eventually led to bulimia. She was a victim of weight cycling the medical term describing the agonizing merry-go-round of losing and gaining weight, starving and bingeing. Through a long process of self-discovery, she broke free from the prison of dieting and found her way to a healthy, fit lifestyle. Since then, Dr. Oliver-Pyatt has spent much of her career developing a program to help men and women free themselves from dieting and lose weight safely and permanently. Her techniques are based on her personal and professional understanding of the complex reasons people become caught up in an endless cycle of dieting.

Not just another diet book, Fed Up! is a medically backed resource that takes a holistic, intelligent approach to adopting and maintaining a fit lifestyle. Here, Dr. Oliver-Pyatt introduces the Ten-Step, No-Diet Fitness Plan that combines the power of psychology and medicine to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime. Step-by-step, she demonstrates how you can free yourself from weight problems forever.
