Smith is an associate professor in the department of electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky, where has taught since 1990 nad has twice won the Outstanding Engineering Professor Award. He earned a B.S. from the University of Kentucky and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
