Learning is much more than reading in a textbook. That's why the tenth edition of this book is integrated closely with an Online Learning Centre where students and professors alike will benefit. The OLC provides animations, virtual labs, online quizzing, Power Point lecture outlines, text images for presentations, and other tools that will help make teaching a little easier and learning a lot more fun. Inquiry into Life covers the whole field of basic biology, and emphasises the application of this knowledge to human concerns. Along with this approach, concepts and principles are stressed, rather than detailed, high-level scientific data and terminology. - New Chapter One: The Study of Life has been updated to strengthen the presentation of the characteristics of life, the organization of the biosphere and the scientific process. - New Conservation of Biodiversity chapter. This new chapter discusses the current biodiversity crisis including why we should care, the root causes, and how to preserve species and prevent extinctions. - Each chapter ends with an e-Learning Connection page, which organises the relevant online study material by major sections, helping to create a stronger association between available study activities and text material.

From the Publisher:
Essential Study Partner CD-ROM. This new CD-ROM tutorial supports and enhances the material presented in Inquiry into Life and is offered free with the text. The Essential Study Partner CD-ROM is packed with over 100 animations and more than 200 learning activities. From quizzes to interactive diagrams, your students will find that there has never been a more exciting way to study biology. Additionally, there are end-of-chapter exercises in the text that relate to the CD-ROM.
An Emphasis on the Scientific Process. Unlike any previous edition of Inquiry into Life, this edition emphasizes the scientific process. This emphasis was accomplished in four ways: a) The introductory chapter begins with a new and expanded explanation of the scientific process. New art and a new reading contribute to this expanded coverage; b) Each part opening page has a short paragraph that mentions historical contributors to the concepts developed in that part; c) The end matter of each chapter contains several Scientifically Thinking questions. These stimulate students to think as a scientist thinks; d) Science Focus readings occur throughout the text. These readings discuss recent biological research in the area under discussion.
New Illustration Program. Almost every illustration in the text is new or has been revised. The goal was to make the art consistent in style, use consistent colors for molecules and organs, add icons to the cell, animal, and biosphere chapters, and add more micrographs. New to this edition are "Visual Focus" illustrations, which give an overview of a particular topic, taking up an entire page.
Bioethical Issues. No general biology book covers as many issues or devotes as much space to this growing area of biology. Each chapter of Inquiry into Life ends with a bioethical issue.
Content and Pedagogy. With Inquiry into Life, you'll find everything the introductory student needs from current topics of study to the most effective learning system available. Every chapter includes the most up-to-date and current information. Additionally, Dr. Mader incorporates the material so students can relate it to their everyday lives.
Customizable. Inquiry into Life is chapter-by-chapter color customizable so you and your students use only the chapters you want.
