From the Publisher:
Proven Authorship- written by the authors of the best-selling texts entitled Visual Basic 6.0 and Advanced Visual Basic 6.0, Java uses the same successful approach and pedagogy that has proven so successful in their Visual Basic textbooks. You can be assured of the quality and dependability with this author team.
Visual Approach- The large number of screen captures and size of screen examples make learning Java easier for students.
Standard Code and Programs- The code and programs used in the text are standard for all Java compliers. Appendixes provide step-by-step directions for several popular development environments, including Microsoft Visual J++, Inprise/Borland Jbuilder, Sun Forte, and Monash BlueJ.
Classroom tested- Programming with Java has been extensively classroom tested! Students have claimed that they enjoy using the book because it begins with an introduction to applets using a Web browser and the visual approach is both fun and engaging.
Visual components are introduced in the first program'in Chapter 1- Most texts begin with a simple program that writes a line to the Java console. This text avoids that artificial and uninteresting output and instead begins programming with objects, in the form of visual components.
The concept of layout managers and dates are introduced much earlier in the text than most texts. Business students demand the ability to control the layout and presentation interface. The Calendar object, introduced in Chapter 2, provides a convenient method for introducing variables.
Proven pedagogy- The same proven pedagogical features from the successful Bradley/Millspaugh Visual Basic books are incorporated into this new Java text.
Presentation of Topics- Each chapter contains explanations of concepts with small snippets of code, as well as complete programs. The complete programs for all in-chapter code are included on CD.
Hands-on Examples- Each chapter contains a hands-on programming example, complete with planning, documentation, and code. Students have praised this feature because it allows them to go through the entire process of creating and running a program.
Tips- Many programming tips are included in every chapter to help students become better programmers and/or avoid common pitfalls.
Programming Exercises- Each chapter has a variety of programming exercises to reinforce the concepts covered in the chapter.
Case Studies in every Chapter- Each chapter contains two case studies that require programs for a coffee shop/newsstand and a quilt store that offers training classes.
Appendices- The appendices provide greater detail for some text topics, such as debugging, math functions, dealing with large decimal numbers, and creating JAR files
