Lahey has built a superior reputation of student success through a sound pedagogical system. A highly respected researcher, Lahey applies learning theory to his text and the result is a system that leads to student learning. Want proof? Open any chapter and you'll see each begins with an advanced organizer that tells the student what the chapter is about and gives him or her a "cognitive structure" on which to hang new information. Each main section is followed by a review to reinforce the cognitive structure, a self quiz to check the learning of facts and critical thinking questions to encourage deep processing. Each of the subsequent sections are tied together in a similar fashion and the chapter is summarized in a hierarchical outline at the chapter conclusion. In short, he tells them what he is going to tell them, then he tells them, then he tells them what he told them. This edition marks the introduction of visual reviews, increased technology utilization, and a new section on study skills. All of this adds up to a text that presents psychology in a way that instructors can trust and that students can learn. This Essentials edition was created for instructors who prefer a more concise text with a soft cover and is based on Lahey's successful Psychology: An Introduction, 7th edition. The content differences between the two books are as follows: the chapters on Research Methods, Gender and Sexuality, and Psychology Applied to Business have been deleted from this edition.

Study Skills Pre-Chapter has been added to help students learn and apply good study habits which will lead to success in this and future courses.
Visual Reviews have been expanded to help visual learners process information more effectively.
Making The Grade Studnet CD ROM which contains practice exams and a learning styles assessment, is packaged with each copy of the text to help students in exam preparation and to aid in overcoming test anxiety.
Concept Web Links in the margins of the text, specifically targets the two to three most difficult concepts in each chapter by providing web links to additional study aids. The name of the concept and the book's URL, which houses the web links, are placed below the icons for clarity. Supplemental audio lectures for these concepts are available on the text web site as additional student resource.
Interactive Visual Reviews have been retained from the 7th edition text and turned into interactive exercises that can be found on the book's online learning center. These visual reviews are designed to facilitate student learning and can be found at the end of chapters, such as Biological Foundations of Behavior, Sensation and Perception, and Personality Theories and Assessment. An icon is placed next to those figures that are interactive.
Current topics such as social and evolutionary theories on gender differences, advances in the study of achievement motivation, the latest findings on intelligence and its role in modern society, and research on the process of the addiction to nicotine have been added to keep the book in step with the advances in psychology. These topics were also expanded to help students apply difficult biological information in the hopes of increasing comprehension.
Proven pedagogical design -each chapter begins with an "advance organizer" that provides the student with a cognitive structure on which to hang new information. Section reviews reinforce the cognitive structure, self-quizzes check the learning of facts, and critical thinking questions encourage deep processing.
Hierarchial outlines at the end of each chapter tie together information from several sections.
Lahey's narrative style manages to bridge the gap between scientific accuracy and student clarity.
