From the Publisher:
The first novella, MI QUERIDA CUÑADA:
Events in the Present. The story was rewritten in present tense, in order to bring the narrated events closer to the reader. Now the narrative is even more accessible to first year students, and the new tale has an engaging feel of immediacy and suspense.
The Protagonist. Vicente is more fully developed. During his conversation with Marie, some of his key characteristics are brought forth. Thus Vicente's description of himself at the end confirms what the reader knows about him already. Those personal details the character offers round out his story and enhance the surprise ending.
A New Structure. The text now has six sections instead of four. The new structure provides a more relaxed pace and gives the reader "breathing room" to comprehend and enjoy the story.
Culture. To enrich the tale's cultural context, two important places on the island are now mentioned: The University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras and the Pablo Casals Museum. Photos of several typical Puerto Rican dishes have also been added.
Activities. All activities were revised. They continue to provide historical and cultural information, and to present engaging topics for discussion. In addition, they now offer more opportunities for personalization. New activities were written to reflect changes in the story, such as the added focus on Puerto Rican cuisine.
The second novella, EL ÚLTIMO SOL:
The New Narrator. "Parte I," rewritten in the first person voice of Daniel Flores, is now narrated by the same engaging character who eventually travels in time. His intimate storytelling voice is believable and realistic.
History. The theme of history is brought forth more emphatically throughout the story and also featured in the Actividades. History is the key to understanding and enjoying this tale, so it now plays a major role in Daniel's account. More than before, history is tied to the message implicit in "El último sol."
Not Just a Dream. The author felt that having the protagonist "wake up and realize it was all a dream" was too easy a resolution. So, for this second edition, he developed a more elaborate context for the character's journey. There is a recurring motif that ties all three parts of the story together, and that makes the "dream" only one of several possibilities. Look for this new motif!
The New Structure. Part II of the story now has three chapters instead of four. It now mirrors the first part, which also has three chapters. But, most importantly, it allows for a more natural and less fragmented narrative flow.
Activities. All activities were revised. They continue to provide historical and cultural information, and to present engaging topics which are now more personalized. New activities reflect changes in the story, such as the emphasis on Mexican history.
