This book is divided into ten sections in order to encompass the entirety of the continent's geographic regions, which include: Pharaonic Egypt; Ancient Nubia; Hellenized Egypt and Nubia; Romanized Carthage and Numidia; Coptic and Islamic North Africa; Ethiopia and Somalia; West Africa; Central Africa; East Africa; and Southern Africa. Each section opens with a map of the region under discussion.
Chronologically arranged headnotes'introduce each selection creating a complete narrative of the history of the African continent.
Indigenous African materials offer a unique opportunity for the reader to experience Africa through the diverse voices and cultural productions in documents, letters, essays, treatises, folklore, and poetry.
Each Part opens with a map of the region of Africa under discussion, as well as a photo. There are also 2 full page maps showing the changes in boundary divisions and country names between 18th century Africa and modern Africa.
About the Author:
Constance Hilliard received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in the areas of African History and Semitic Historiography. She is spending 1997/1998 at Wellesley College as a Visiting Professor. Ms. Hilliard rejoined academia after serving for several years as a foreign policy staff analyst for the U.S. Senate and as a columnist for the Dallas Morning News. She is Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas.
