From the Publisher:
Clarity of Presentation. The authors have taken great care not to overwhelm and frighten students with dry, abstract discussions. More than any other text they have laced their presentations with clarifying examples and summarizing charts, tables and diagrams. A simple, direct writing style and a two color design add to the text's appeal.
Qualitative Research. The text has been reorganized to include two parts focused on qualitative research for a total of 5 chapters (Part V: Introduction to Qualitative Research and Part VI: Qualitative Methodologies). A discussion of qualitative methods is also integrated throughout the text as appropriate.
Action Research. Doing Research in Schools has been expanded into a new chapter entitled Action Research (Ch. 23). This chapter provides an introduction to Action Research and is full of 'real life' examples of how action research questions are developed.
Research Reports. New annotated research reports have been added to accompany the new qualitative methods chapters.
Features. Two new features have been added: Controversies in Research (examines controversial topics in research) and Research Tips (provides guidelines and tips for doing research). The popular More About Research feature has been expanded.
Interactive and Applied Learning. This feature located at the start of each chapter lists the student resources and activities available on the Online Learning Center, Interactive CD-Rom or Workbook for that chapter. A feature at the end of the chapter lists chapter review resources located on the Online Learning Center or Interactive CD-Rom.
Student Supplements. Packaged for free with each new copy of the text are an Interactive Student CD-Rom (with quizzes, audio clips explaining important concepts, interactive activities, a statistics program, a statistics primer, electronic forms and additional resources) and a Student Workbook (with practice activities designed to help student understanding of difficult concepts and full-sized versions of the Problem Sheets). In addition, an Online Learning Center (with an online student study guide) is available.
Comprehensive Coverage. The text provides thorough discussion of educational research including an introduction to research, the basics of educational research, data analysis, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, action research and preparing research proposals and reports.
Pedagogy. The text's strong pedagogical structure has been expanded to provide more student support. Pedagogical features includes a chapter-opening illustration that visual represents content to follow, a graphic organizer, objectives, a chapter-opening example/vignettes related to chapter content, a detailed summary, Key Terms, For Discussion, Research Exercises, and Problem Sheets. Numerous tables, figures and illustrations expand and clarify concepts throughout the chapters. Features include More About Research, Controversies in Research and Research Tips.
Annotated Research Reports. Each of the methodology chapters in Parts IV-VI concludes with a published research study that illustrates that particular research method. The strengths and weaknesses of these studies are then thoroughly discussed and critiqued by the authors.
Application Exercises and Problem Sheets. Chapters 1-13 contain end-of-chapter Research Exercises and Problem Sheets that enable students to apply the information presented to a research project of their own choosing.
Visual Appeal. Throughout the text, numerous illustrations of key ideas and concepts help students learn how to design and evaluate research in education. An engaging new 2-color design makes it the most attractive educational research text on the market.
The Most Student-Friendly Educational Research Text. The text's clarity of presentation, pedagogy, annotated research reports, application exercises and problem sheets, visual appeal and wealth of student supplements make How to Design and Evaluate Research in Education the most student-accessible educational research text on the market.
