E. Campbell is professor emeritus, University of Birmingham and a leading British scholar of early twentieth-century American history. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919), often referred to as Teddy or by his initials, T. R., was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. Assuming the presidency after McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for anti-trust and Progressive policies. In the first decade of the 20th century the United States was on the threshold of international power. Since the Civil War America had grown enormously in wealth and strength. Now she was ready to translate this economic strength into world-wide influence. To lead them in this vital decade, Americans were fortunate to possess a statesman who marvelously reflected many of their national virtues, President Theodore Roosevelt. The author describes the tumultuous career of this remarkable man, and assesses its significance against the complex background of the American story in the half-century before the First World War.
