9780066620572: Cycle of Leadership: How great leaders teach their companies to win

Today's radically transformed knowledge economy requires winning companies to be fast – and smart. In his new book, best-selling management author Noel Tichy shows that the smartest, fastest, and most successful organizations are explicitly designed to encourage the creation and sharing of knowledge.

These companies foster the sharing of valuable information by creating cycles of learning and teaching. In these Virtuous Teaching Cycles everyone learns and everyone teaches. They start with top leaders clearly defining and personally teaching their ideas, values, and strategies. But the teaching is not the traditional one-way cram-down of policies and instructions. It is •interactive* teaching in which the students are encouraged to process what they've heard against their own experience and knowledge. They then become the teachers, sharing their knowledge and insights with the leaders.

Tichy examines the teaching and learning strategies of great company builders from Jack Welch to Michael Dell and more than a dozen other winning leaders. He details how they have created organizations that foster knowledge exchange and how for their efforts they have developed smart, aligned, and energized workforces that consistently beat out the competition.

Tichy examines an array of teaching and learning methodologies:

• General Electric's deployment of 15,000 Black Belt leaders who teach and lead Six Sigma quality-improvement projects.

• Trilogy Software's use of the new hires in its Trilogy University orientation program to drive product development and continual transformation of the company.

• Accenture's creation of small communities that bring its far-flung consultants together to share best practices and coach one another.

Other examples come from Home Depot, 3M, Dell, Pepsico, Yum! Brands, Intel, Cisco, Genentech, Limited Brands, and the U.S. Special Operations Forces.

Tichy shows how choosing between business results and people development is no longer a zero-sum game but the only way to thrive and avoid the 'vicious nonteaching cycles' that have recently destroyed so many companies and prominent leaders.

A handbook is included in this volume that gives readers specific tools for building and leading a Teaching Organization.

Review:

"I am gung ho about this book because it cracks the code on how leaders build winning organizations. Noel Tichy offers top-flight benchmarks along with practical guidelines for how to build large-scale teaching organizations."
Ken Blanchard, coauthor, Leadership and the One Minute Manager

"We are now in a knowledge-based economy, where the control of knowledge is the secret of success. This then raises the issue of how one generates and controls knowledge in the creation of wealth. And it is here that Noel Tichy's book comes to the fore. Knowledge has to be both created and taught. Learning and teaching organizations have to be built. But how is it to be done? Tichy provides the answers."
Lester Thurow, Lemelson Professor of Management and Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and author of Building Wealth

"Tichy's contribution to developing leaders is Olympian. This book gets the gold."
Warren Bennis, distinguished professor of business, USC, and coauthor of Geeks and Geezers

"The Cycle of Leadership defines a road map for business leaders that is both practical and memorable."
Joe W. Forehand, chairman and CEO, Accenture

"With The Cycle of Leadership, Noel Tichy not only offers the spot-on insight that the future belongs to a new breed of companies that is big, fast, and smart, he also shows what it will take to be part of that future. It's a book filled with teachable – and learnable – moments."
Alan M. Webber, founding editor, Fast Company

"This book shows us the way to leadership greatness. A practical and inspiring book."
Frances Hesselbein, president and CEO, the Drucker Foundation

"Noel Tichy's concept of building Virtuous Teaching Cycles gives today's leaders a path to build organizations fast enough to benefit from today's unprecedented rate of change."
Brad Anderson, vice chairman and CEO, Best Buy

"Drawing on a lifetime of experience, including his years at GE, Noel Tichy demonstrates the power of teaching. If one starts with a teachable point of view and dialogue (not monologue), the participant learns both the lesson and the culture. The teacher, meanwhile, learns from the students' point of view."
John W. Bachmann, managing partner, Edward Jones

Book Description HarperCollins Publishers Inc, United States, 2004. Paperback. Book Condition: New. New edition. 202 x 132 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. In The Leadership Engine, Noel Tichy showed how great companies strive to create leaders at all levels of the organization, and how those leaders actively develop future generations of leaders. In this new book, he takes the theme further, showing how great companies and their leaders develop their business knowledge into ?achable points of view,?pend a great portion of their time giving their learnings to others, sharing best practices, and how they in turn learn and receive business ideas/knowledge from the employees they are teaching. Calling this exchange a virtuous teaching cycle, Professor Tichy shows how business builders from Jack Welch at GE to Joe Liemandt at Trilogy create organizations that foster this knowledge exchange and how their efforts result in smarter, more agile companies, and winning results. Some of these ideas were showcased in Tichy?s recent Harvard Business Review article entitled, ? Ordinary Boot Camp. Using examples from GE, Ford, Dell, Southwest Airlines and many others, Tichy presents and analyzes these principles in action and shows how managers can begin to transform their own businesses into teaching organizations and, consequently, better-performing companies.
