A most unusual writing experience.
I wrote the first draft of this book over five months, while living with Dr. Hazel Parcells, who was 105 at the time. Every day for five hours, I interviewed her at the computer. Since I type fast, I asked her just to talk about certain subjects -- and I typed in everything she said. After the first month, I did an organizational search on the computer and printed out what I had. It was 350 pages of notes! Then I sifted and edited...and went back to interviewing Dr. Parcells. I went through this process three more times until I came up with what emerged from the material as Seven Steps of the Parcells Method. During all this time, by the way, Dr. Parcells was bright, cheerful, articulate, funny, and enormously happy to be part of the writing experience. At the age of 105, she was vibrantly alive! I could work only at two-hour stretches, after which I excused myself to get some fresh air (we were living in the mountains of northern New Mexico). She didn't seem to need breaks at all. She would tell me, "Be back soon." When I returned to the computer, she was ready with more information. It was the most unusual writing experience I have ever had -- my tenth book, and possibly the most rewarding personally to write. I hope the readers of the book will find in it some of the joy that I got from writing it -- and from sharing such an intimate experience with a most remarkable woman: Dr. Hazel Parcells.
