9780062217219: Waiting to Be Heard: A Memoir

Amanda Knox, the young exchange student whose conviction and acquittal on murder charges in Italy made headlines worldwide, tells her own story for the very first time in an unflinching, deeply personal account.

In October 2007, twenty-year-old Amanda Knox, a college student from Seattle, moved to Perugia, Italy to study abroad. That November, one of her roommates, British student Meredith Kercher, was murdered in their apartment.

Amanda was arrested for the murder, and a media firestorm erupted around her. The subsequent investigation and legal proceedings exposed her to international scrutiny and speculation and she became a tabloid staple.

After an extremely controversial trial, she was convicted in 2009. But in October 2011, after Amanda spent four years in an Italian prison and following a lengthy appeals process, the conviction was overturned. Amanda immediately returned home to the US.

For the very first time since her trial for murder, her four-year incarceration in Italy, and her appeal and acquittal of all charges, Amanda Knox will share the truth about her terrifying ordeal. She will give a full and unflinching account of the events that led to her arrest in Perugia and her struggles with the complexities of the Italian judicial system.

Aided by journals she kept and letters she wrote during her imprisonment, Amanda will discuss her harrowing experience at the hands of the Italian police and later prison guards and inmates.

She will speak intimately about what it was like, at twenty years old, to find herself imprisoned in a foreign country for a crime she did not commit, and the impact it had on her family and her loved ones as they travelled back and forth to be at her side so that there was always someone with her.

She will reveal never-before-told details surrounding her case, and describe how she used her inner strength and strong family ties to cope with the most challenging time of her young life. With grace and maturity, Amanda will describe the aftermath of the ordeal and her return to the States, as well as her hopes for the future.

Book Description Harper Paperbacks, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Reprint. 201 x 135 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. As seen in the Nextflix documentary Amanda Knox, in March 2015, the Supreme Court of Italy exonerated Amanda Knox, author of the New York Times bestselling memoir Waiting To Be Heard. In an afterward to this newly issued paperback edition, Amanda updates readers on her life since 2011, introduces the individuals who helped her persevere as her case continued through the Italian courts, and shares her plans for helping others who have also been wrongfully convicted. In November 2007, 20 year-old Amanda Knox had only been studying in Perugia, Italy, for a few weeks when her friend and roommate, British student Meredith Kercher, was murdered. The investigation made headlines around the world, and Amanda s arrest placed her at the center of a media firestorm. After an extremely controversial trial, she was convicted of murder in 2009. She spent four years in an Italian prison until a new court, which appointed independent experts to review the prosecution s DNA evidence, affirmatively found her innocent in 2011. She returned home to Seattle, Washington. But just when Amanda thought her legal nightmare had ended, it began all over again. In March 2013, Italy s highest court annulled the acquittal and sent the case to the lower courts for further proceedings. Even though no new evidence was introduced against her, Amanda was found guilty and sentenced to 281/2 years in prison in January, 2014. This decision was overturned by the Italian Supreme Court, which exonerated her of the murder charge. In Waiting to Be Heard, Amanda speaks about what it was like to find herself imprisoned in a foreign country for a crime she did not commit, and how much she relied on the unwavering support of her family and friends, many of whom made extraordinary sacrifices on her behalf. Waiting to Be Heard is an unflinching, heartfelt coming-of-age narrative like no other--now with a new afterword, in which Amanda describes the heart-stopping final twists in her fight for freedom, and her hopes for the future.
