9780061992155: Dracula

Prince of the Night. Lord of the Damned. King of Vampires. He is Dracula, the most well-known vampire in the world—and this new illustrated edition of Bram Stoker’s classic tale of terror offers Dracula as you have never seen him before. Brought to life through the stunning visual artistry of Eisner Award-winning illustrator Becky Cloonan (Demo, American Virgin, Victor Von Doom), this new graphically compelling novel offers a spellbinding, edition of the book that launched the world’s enduring fascination with vampires: Bram Stoker’s complete and unabridged Dracula. Illuminated and accentuated by the visionary hand of one of America’s most gifted illustrators, Dracula is perfect for fans of the ghastly and paranormal, and unmissable for fans of True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and Tim Burton’s macabre new film, Dark Shadows (release May 11, 2012) starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Jackie Earle Haley.

Review:

Dracula is one of the few horror books to be honored by inclusion in the Norton Critical Edition series. (The others are Frankenstein, The Turn of the Screw, Heart of Darkness, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Metamorphosis.) This 100th-anniversary edition includes not only the complete authoritative text of the novel with illuminating footnotes, but also four contextual essays, five reviews from the time of publication, five articles on dramatic and film variations, and seven selections from literary and academic criticism. Nina Auerbach of the University of Pennsylvania (author of Our Vampires, Ourselves) and horror scholar David J. Skal (author of Hollywood Gothic, The Monster Show, and Screams of Reason) are the editors of the volume. Especially fascinating are excerpts from materials that Bram Stoker consulted in his research for the book, and his working papers over the several years he was composing it. The selection of criticism includes essays on how Dracula deals with female sexuality, gender inversion, homoerotic elements, and Victorian fears of "reverse colonization" by politically turbulent Transylvania.

Book Description:

While serving as actor Henry Irving's business manager at the Lyceum Theatre in London, Bram Stoker (1847-1912) also pursued his literary interests. In this Gothic horror novel of 1897, which brought him international fame, he presents the chilling vampire Count Dracula, modelled in part on Irving's powerful personality.

Book Description HarperCollins Publishers Inc, United States, 2012. Hardback. Book Condition: New. Becky Cloonan (illustrator). Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. Count Dracula as you ve never seen him before! The novel that made vampire a household word, Bram Stoker s Dracula has been delighting - and chilling - readers for well over 100 years. Now the immortal Count returns in this stunning new edition, offering the complete text of Stoker s dark masterwork adorned with more than 50 original illlustrations by renowned, award-winning artist Becky Cloonan. Johnny Depp produces and stars as Barnabas Collins in what will be the eighth collaboration between the two. Also starring are Helena Bonham-Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Jackie Earle Hayley. Dark Shadows is inspired by the TV show of the same name, which ran from 1966-1971. Drawing on classic gothic and horror novels for its storylines, this daily gothic soap opera featured ghosts, zombies, werewolves, and witches; when the Dracula-inspired Barnabas Collins was introduced in 1967, the show s popularity soared, signifying the power of the vampire figure. A more contemporary Count Dracula - rendered edgier, more colourful and stylishly macabre with Victorian overtones, through Cloonan s unparalleled artistic skill and unique visual imagination - takes flight in this magnificent volume that every Twilight and True Blood fan will want to sink their teeth into.
