9780061953255: Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed one of the most remarkable emergency landings in history when Captain Chelsley 'Sully' Sullenberger skillfully glided US Airways Flight 1549 onto the surface of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 passengers and crew aboard. His cool actions not only averted tragedy but made him a hero and an inspiration worldwide. To Sullenberger, a calm, steady pilot with forty years of flying experience who is also a safety consulting expert, the landing was not a miracle, but rather the result of years of practice and training-wisdom he gained in U.S. Air Force jets and in his Texas childhood. Born to a dentist father and an elementary school teacher mother, Sully fell in love with planes as a young boy. He learned to fly at 16, taking lessons from a cropduster in a vintage airplane from a grass strip nearby. While his father, a World War II veteran, offered encouragement, he also imparted stern advice the future pilot took to heart: a commander is responsible for everyone in his care. They are words that have shaped Sully's life and work and continue to guide him today. At its heart, this is a story of hope and preparedness - supporting the belief that life's challenges can be met if we're ready for them - reminding us that, even in these challenging days, there are things still worth fighting for.

Review:

If you are looking for an iconic figure of heroism, you can't do much better than Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger III...Not only did he get an airliner from nearly a kilometre up in the air to ground level without the aid of engines, he was also the last to leave the plane after checking everyone had escaped... --BBC Radio 4 - Today Programme, Friday 30 October

This week Captain Sullenberger landed in London to receive the "Master's Medal" from the Guild of Air Pilots & Air Navigators on behalf the crew of US Airways Airbus A320 and to tell the full story of his flight into the Hudson on January 15. His arrival coincides with the launch of his book, Highest Duty -- compiled with impressive alacrity -- which describes Flight 1549 and his life leading up to it.
--The Times, Friday 30 October

From the Back Cover:

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed a remarkable emergency landing when Captain "Sully" Sullenberger skillfully glided US Airways Flight 1549 onto the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. His cool actions not only averted tragedy but made him a hero and an inspiration worldwide.

Highest Duty is Sully's story—a story of dedication, hope, and preparedness, revealing the important lessons he learned through childhood, in his military service, and in his work as a commercial airline pilot. It reminds us all that, even in these days of war, tragedy, and economic uncertainty, there are values still worth fighting for—that life's challenges can be met if we're ready for them.
