9780061626647: Remarkable Birds: 100 of the World's Most Notable Birds

For the first time ever, here is a highly selective list of the 100 most beautiful, glamorous, unusual, and iconic birds the world has ever known. Some are so rare they are on the verge of extinction, while others are so numerous they are literally uncountable. Some are famous for their looks, and others for their lifestyle. But all have exceptional qualities that make them the most sought-after, cherished, and famous birds in the world.

In order to create the list for this book, birders and conservationists worldwide were asked to nominate their favorite birds, and give their reasons why these should win a place in this book. The final selections are based upon this truly global list.

Published in association with BirdLife International, the world's leading bird conservation organization, Remarkable Birds explains why each of the featured birds is so fascinating, and includes a stunning photograph of each species. From albatrosses to wrens--via cranes and crows, hoopoes and hummingbirds, penguins and plovers, wallcreepers and warblers--Remarkable Birds takes you on a journey of extraordinary discovery.

Product Description:

A celebration of the world's favourite birds, as nominated by birders and conservationists worldwide

Birders worldwide were asked to tell us the top 10 favourite birds in their country and why. The responses included contributions from people from major organisations, such as Audubon and BirdLife, as well as bird lovers around the world, and formed the basis for the list of the 100 birds within this book. These include the most glamorous or extraordinary birds from the common to the less well-known: penguins to hummingbirds and toucans to cranes.

A quirky design and gift format give this bird book a distinctive edge. Beautiful photos support fascinating text, which explores the cultural associations and conservation stories of our favourite species, and what exactly makes them special.

Review:

‘Excellent colour photos’
Derwent May, The Times

‘Whilst the text is very well written the photographs are a delight and worth getting the book for in their own right. The full page of the snowy owl image looked so realistic you thought Harry Potter would suddenly put his hand out from the side of the photograph. A fascinating book and a superb addition to anyone's bookshelves.’
Ray Collier, Highland News

‘Smashing book, beautifully written, presented and produced. After a hard day at work or out in the field, reach for this book, sit back with a cup of coffee and relax.’
Dartford Times

‘This amazing book is not just for bird lovers, as almost everyone will appreciate the stunning photographs of these beautiful and majestic creatures’
Leicestershire & Rutland Life, Derbyshire Life and Hertfordshire Life
