9780061001543: The Trail Driver

4,500 head of longhorns - it was the biggest herd ever driven down the Chisholm Trail
Cattleman Adam Brite and his men knew they'd be in for trouble. And they got it - deadly Comanche raiders, trail rustlers, storms, floods, stampedes, sudden death! But they found one thing they didn't expect - a lovely girl alone in the middle of the Trail. And that was one kind of trouble these cowboys didn't know how to handle.

About the Author:

American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

William Dufris has been nominated nine times as a finalist for the APA's prestigious Audie Award and has garnered twenty-one Earphones Awards from AudioFile magazine, which also named him one of the Best Voices at the End of the Century. He has also acted on stage and television in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

From AudioFile:

Just as evocatively as Zane Grey portrays the Western landscape, William Dufris powerfully portrays Grey's characters. With vocal embellishments, Dufris dramatizes the main characters--a ranch owner, a trail boss, and a gunfighter--as well as all the Texas cowhands. Using flair, wit, and sensitivity, Dufris captivates listeners and involves them in the beauty, sentiment, and danger of the Old West. Smooth narration of a good cowboy yarn and a heartwarming story of young love is a hard-to-beat combination. S.C.A. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
