‘The “Children of Violence” series gives an astounding compression of a total, coherent vision, as if Doris Lessing knew all along where it would end.’ The Times

Book Description Harper Perennial. 1 Paperback(s), 1995. soft. Book Condition: New. In the aftermath of World War II, Martha Quest finds herself completely disillusioned in this 1965 novel, the fourth book in Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing's Children of Violence sequence—an incisive, all-encompassing vision of the 20th century in five novels, each a masterwork in its own right. Quest, not unlike Lessing herself in this time, is losing faith with the communist movement in Africa, and her marriage to one of the movement's leaders is disintegrating. Resisting the erosion of her own personality, she engages in what turns out to be her first satisfactory love affair and breaks free, if only momentarily, from her suffocating unhappiness. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 2007, Lessing (1919–2013) was one of the most celebrated and distinguished writers of our time, receiving the Somerset Maugham Award, the David Cohen Memorial Prize for British Literature, the James Tait Black Prize, Spain's Prix Catalunya and Prince of Asturias Prize, and a dozen other prestigious literary awards."She is not the only best woman novelist we have but one of the most serious and intelligent and honest writers of the whole post-war generation."—Sunday Times (London) 347.
