THE BLIND SIDE OF THE HEART is a mystery of the human heart.
My novel, THE BLIND SIDE OF THE HEART, is a story about one woman's faith in and love for a man, Father Jack Devlin, the parish priest whose house she keeps. For eighteen years, Maggie Quinn, the Irish narrator, has worked for Father Jack in the small western Massachusetts town of Hebron Falls. In that time she has come to know the man in intimate and revealing ways, not only as her employer but as her priest and friend. As she says, "I knew Father as well as any and a damn sight better than most of those birds." His friendship has helped her recover from a personal tragedy and from her own private demons. His guidance has enabled her to find her faith in God and the Church once more. However, when Father Jack is accused of terrible crimes, Maggie is put in a position where her faith in the man is tested. Like ALIAS GRACE and BEFORE AND AFTER, THE BLIND SIDE OF THE HEART is a story about the enigma of the human heart and the layers of truth it is capable of hiding. What I find interesting is the predicament that Maggie finds herself confronting: does she continue to defend Father Jack even as her own heart begins to question this faith.
